Eighty-five area high school students made up the inaugural class of the Medical District High School when it opened its doors on the Union Avenue Campus Aug. 9, 2021. Shelby County Schools operates the school where the intrepid scholars from across Shelby County will study allied health or information technology at Southwest while they pursue their high school diploma and associate's degree simultaneously.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for these students to graduate from high school with an associate’s degree in career fields that are ripe with opportunity,” Dr. Tracy D. Hall, President of Southwest Tennessee Community College, said.
“We are proud to partner with Southwest Tennessee Community College to provide this exciting opportunity for our students,” SCS Superintendent Joris Ray said at the grand opening celebration Aug. 6.
All rising ninth graders are eligible to apply to attend the school free of charge. Kesha Ivy, former vice principal at Southwind High School, is the school’s principal.
